Pattern 1796 Light Cavalry Officer's sword, 1814

Presentation sword, given to Major General Lord Edward H Somerset, 4th Regiment of Dragoons, by the officers of that regiment as a symbol of their regard for his behaviour as the commander of the Regiment during the Peninsular Campaign.

The blade is decorated with gilding and bluing, and is engraved with the royal coat of arms, a dedication, the crest and motto of Lord Somerset, and the maker's name, John Andrews. The cross guard of the stirrup guard is in the form of a dragon with the tail forming the knuckle guard. The langets are decorated with a portcullis and chains and the motto of Lord Somerset. The scabbard is made of gilt brass and fishskin.

Lord Somerset later left the Dragoons and joined a Guards Regiment. He was in the confidence of Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington and was present at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
