Study for the oil painting, 'The flag: Albuhera, May 16, 1811'
Charcoal and wash sketch from a sketchbook by William Barns Wollen (1857-1936), 1911 (c).
The study represents a cavalrymen in French service at the Battle of Albuera during the Peninsular War (1808-1814). This is a preliminary sketch for the figure of a bare-headed officer, armed with a sword, circling the colour party of the 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs) who appears in the final painting.
Wollen's oil painting of the Battle of Albuera was part of the Buffs Regimental Museum Collection and was gifted to the National Army Museum in 2001 (NAM. 2001-04-325).
