Studies for the oil painting, 'The flag: Albuhera, May 16, 1811'
Charcoal and wash sketches from a sketchbook by William Barns Wollen (1857-1936), 1911 (c).
The sketches represent British soldiers of the 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs) defending their colour at the Battle of Albuera during the Peninsular War (1808-1814). The central figure holds a spontoon, or short pike, while the figure on the right is armed with a musket and bayonet.
Wollen's oil painting of the Battle of Albuera was part of the Buffs Regimental Museum Collection and was gifted to the National Army Museum in 2001 (NAM. 2001-04-325).
