German aerial incendiary bomb, 1917 (c)

The German airship and Zeppelin bombing campaign against Britain during World War One (1914-1918) began in January 1915. Bombing from airships was an imprecise business and many bombs fell well away from their intended targets. Around 2,000 people were killed or wounded by the raids on Britain. While the campaign had little strategic importance during the War the psychological effect on the population of Britain was considerable. As a result their was a disproportionate drain on resources to counter the bombing raids. By the end of the War airships had been superseded by bomber aircraft.
