A number of senior officers were interested in the history of the regiments in which they served, and turned their hands to writing regimental histories - a valuable source of information to historians today. Hamilton (1815-1890) was the author of 'The origin and history of the First or Grenadier Guards. From documents in the State paper office, War office, Horse guards, contemporary history, regimental records, etc', which was published by John Murray, in London, 1874.
