Letter from Lord Cornwallis to Major General Henry Fox, 4 December 1803
In this letter Cornwallis condemns the insurrection in Ireland in July 1803 and the murder of Ireland's Lord Chief Justice Lord Kilwarden (dragged from his coach and killed by rebels on 23 July 1803); he also states that he did not think that the civil or military authorities could be blamed for failing to prevent the rebellion from taking place. Cornwallis also makes clear that he does not believe any blame can be placed upon Fox himself who was then Commander-in-Chief in Ireland.
From a collection of 17 miscellaneous autograph letters and documents, 1793-1914.
