Camp of the 15th (Bengal) Native Infantry, Suakin Field Force, 1885
Photograph by 10th Company, Royal Engineers, Sudan, 1885.
The Field Force operating from Suakin on the Red Sea was a diversion to the main (ultimately unsuccessful) attempt to relieve Major-General Gordon, besieged in Khartoum by the Mahdi and his Sudanese army, by means of an advance up the Nile Valley.
From an album of 72 photograph taken by the Royal Engineers with the Suakin Field Force, 1st Sudan War (1883-1885).
