Wounded soldiers in the Ngakyedauk Box, February 1944

Photograph, World War Two, Far East, 1944.

Wounded Indian Army personnel rest in a jungle clearing during XV Corps' campaign in the Arakan, Burma. Elements of the latter were surrounded by the Japanese 28th Army after it cut the Ngakyedauk Pass Road. Despite this setback, the Anglo-Indian units were supplied by air and held out in the famous Battle of the Admin Box.

From a collection of official photographs collected by Major General (later Lieutenant General) Sir Frank Walter Messervy.
