Field Marshal John French (1852-1925) established his reputation as a cavalry commander during the Boer War (1899-1901). During World War One (1914-1918) he commanded the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front in 1914-1915 and then served as Commander-in-Chief of Home Forces. He was created a Viscount in 1916 and an Earl in 1922. Between 1918 and 1921 he served as the last Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.

From an album of 500 photographs compiled by the Anglo-Russian Press Service Limited and dedicated to the Prime Minister, Lloyd George, and those who fell in the War, 6 September 1918.
