'Zulu refugees', South Africa, 1900
Photograph, Boer War (1899-1902), 1900.
During the Boer War (1899-1902), the British Army built refugee camps for those civilian families who had been forced to abandon their homes for reasons related to the war. When the Earl Kitchener took over command of the British forces in late 1900, he employed new tactics to break the guerilla campaign, increasing the number of displaced civilians. These refugee camps became concentration camps, with the majority of inmates being women and children as most male prisoners of war were sent overseas.
From an album of 48 photographs compiled by Captain W G E Burrows, South Wales Borderers, Boer War (1899-1902).
