Major (later Colonel) Donald John Dean VC was commissioned in the Royal West Kent Regiment in 1916, having served as a private on the Western Front with the 28th London (Artists Rifles) Regiment. He won his Victoria Cross in September 1918 when, as a temporary lieutenant, he led the defence of position in a captured German trench against several counterattacks.
