Headquarters staff, Kabul, 1880

Photograph by John Burke, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1880.

In 1880, the headquarters staff of the 7000-strong British Kabul field force was reasonably compact. Among the sitters, other than General Frederick Sleigh Roberts (third from right, middle row), perhaps the most notable is Lieutenant (later Colonel Sir) Neville Chamberlain (1856-1944), Assistant Political Officer (seated on ground, centre), who had invented the game of snooker in 1875.

From an album of 60 photographs by John Burke.
