Kurram Fort was occupied at the start of the 2nd Afghan War by Major-General Frederick Roberts' Kurram Valley Field Force on 25 November 1878. It became an important base for the advance on Peiwar Kotal, some 20 miles further ahead. Field hospitals were established to cater for the wounded.
