17 hollow based lead Minié bullets used by the 88th Regiment of Foot (Connaught Rangers) for range practice, 1854
The 88th (Connaught Rangers) Regiment of Foot was one of ten regiments selected to test the Pattern 1851 Minié Rifle Musket. The Minié bullet was made from lead, a soft metal that easily distorted upon hitting a target. With its iron cup, the bullet weighed 680 grains (44 grams) and measured .690 inch (1.75 cm) in diameter.
The 17 bullets were recovered from the range of the 88th (Connaught Rangers) Regiment of Foot, having been used as practice rounds before heading out to the Crimea.
