Lieutenant (later Major-General) George Briggs, [Madras] Artillery, 1832 (c)

Oil on board, by Godwin Williams, 1832 (c).

George Briggs (1808-1875), shown here in a black frock coat with red sash, served with the Madras Artillery. When this painting was completed the latter had just been increased in size from two to three battalions of five companies each plus a 'Golundauze' battalion of seven companies. Until the demise of the East India Company's Army in 1861, the Madras Artillery always had European officers and European soldiers, except for the 'Golundauze' Battalion which employed Indian gunners. Briggs retired from the Madras Army in 1867 with the rank of major-general.
