Case shot reputed to have been fired by Mysorean cannon at the Battle of Perembacum, 1780
Iron case shot, 2nd Mysore War (1780-1784). Mounted on a stand with a plate bearing an inscription,
'Ball fired by Haidar Ali's Forces 10 Sept 1780 at Perambaukam when Lt Col Baillie's Force was destroyed'.
The Battle of Perembacum was one of the East India Company's worst military defeats. A force of about 3,700 European and Indian troops, under Lieutenant-Colonel Willian Baillie, was overwhelmed by the much larger army of Hyder Ali Khan Bhadur, the ruler of Mysore.
Hyder's force, at least 10,000 strong, included 18 pieces of artillery. This ball is a piece of 'case-shot' - small iron balls fired from a cannon - which could cause terrible casualties to close-packed ranks of infantry.
