Major-General Sir Jasper Nicolls, KCB, 1827 (c)
Oil on canvas, attributed to Noel Norton Carter (1799-1847), 1827 (c).
Nicolls (1778-1849) is depicted wearing a major-general's uniform, with the Badge and Star of a Knight Commander of the Bath (KCB).
Nicolls received the KCB for his part in the Bhurtpore campaign of 1826, and was promoted Lieutenant-General in 1837. He was Commander-in-Chief in India from 1839 until 1843. The campaign medal shown does not appear to have any similarity, either of ribbon or in the design of the relief, to any medal which Nicolls could have received before 1837.
