Dismounted Natal Carbineers ambush a mounted party of Boers.
Paget illustrated Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories in 'The Strand Magazine' but also worked for 'The Sphere', 'The Graphic' and 'The Illustrated London News'.
The Natal Carbineers was raised in 1855 and served in the Zulu War (1879) and the Boer War (1899-1902). During the latter conflict much of the unit participated in the defence of Ladysmith. The regiment remained in existence through the World Wars. In 2019 the Natal Carbineers became the Ingobamakhosi Carbineers, named after one of the regiments of the Zulu army in the 19th century.
