'Gordons advance at Elandslaagte', 1899
Lantern slide reproducing an illustration from the 'Illustrated London News' magazine, 1900.
The 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders advance supported by artillery.
During their invasion of Natal, Boer forces captured the railway station at Elandslaagte, cutting communications with Ladysmith and Dundee. The British responded on 21 October 1899 by driving them out of this position by the skilful deployment of dismounted units from the Imperial Light Horse and three battalions of regular infantry.
As well as 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders, the 1st Battalion, Manchester Regiment, the 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment and mounted infantry of the Imperial Light Horse, were involved in the battle. As the Boers retreated they were attacked by squadrons of the 5th Royal Irish Lancers and the 5th Dragoon Guards.
