A group photograph of the Protectorate Regiment commanded by Colonel Charles Owen Hore, South Staffordshire Regiment, which was part of the garrison of Mafeking during the Boer War (1899-1902) siege.
The Protectorate Regiment was praised by the British commander, Colonel R S S Baden-Powell (1857-1941), who noted that the men had 'a spirit and dash worthy of highly trained troops'. Three members of the Regiment were awarded the Victoria Cross for their actions during the siege.
