George William Mignan (1756-1819) joined the Bombay Army of the East India Company in 1776, having previously served with the Bombay Marines. He took part in the expedition against the lawless tribe, the Kolis of Kathiawar, the storming of the fortress of Onore and served in the Second Anglo-Mysore (1780-1784), including the Siege of Mangalore. As a captain in 1786, he was aide-de-camp to Brigadier-General Laurence Nilson at Bombay.
After retiring from the army in 1797, Mignan returned to Bombay and held the appointment of Sheriff of Bombay from 1812 to 1817. He was then mayor until his death at Colaba (now part of the city of Mumbai) on 21 November 1819.
