'Naga Scouts', 1911 (c)

Photograph from an album of 100 photographs taken by Captain D H R Gifford, 8th Gurkha Rifles, India.

The Nagas are a hill-tribe from the Assam-Burma border area. During the Abor Expedition of 1911-1912 they were valued greatly as scouts, porters and labourers, a role they were to play again during the Burma campaign in the Second World War.
