Swinburn-Henry .45 inch breech-loading carbine, Natal Mounted Police, 1874
Similar to the Martini-Henry Carbine used by the British Army, the Swinburn-Henry had a much more prominent indicator lever to show that the weapon was cocked. Purchased for colonial units like the Natal Mounted Police, it is unusual in having a bayonet bar for a small knife bayonet. The Natal Mounted Police were issued with bayonets as they did not carry swords.
