Colonel Godlieb James Van Someren, Madras Infantry, 1889 (c)

Godlieb Van Someren (1842-1915) joined the Madras Army as an ensign just after the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) on 7 September 1859, and was promoted to lieutenant on 1 January 1862. He retired with the rank of colonel. The artist, Captain Edmund Lawrence Van Someren, was born in Bangalore and is thought to have been the sitter's son.
Colonel Van Someren died in South Kensington in 1915 and his obituary appeared in 'The Times' of 15 January.
