Heliograph operating, South Africa, 1900
Photograph, Boer War (1899-1902), 1900.
Heliographs used a small mirror mounted on a tripod to reflect sunlight in order to flash messages in Morse code. In clear weather conditions and on open terrain their signals could be seen many miles away.
From an album of 144 photographs compiled by Sgn W H Harland, 17th (Duke of Cambridge's Own) Lancers, 1900-1901.
