Entrenching spade, Wallace Pattern, 1882
Made by Edward Lucas and Sons, Sheffield, impressed with the maker's name, pattern details and War Department marks.
Iron rectangular blade, tapering to a rounded point with the shoulders folded over and impressed on the top with crosses which give a grip when used. The pale wood shaft fits into a flanged socket and the handle is formed as a combined pick and borer and bound with a continuous thick iron band.
The shaft and has been hit by a bullet which remains embedded in the wood.
