Fort Nicholas, Sevastopol, 1855

Photograph by James Robertson (1813-1888), Crimean War (1854-1856), 1855.

Robertson's depictions of the aftermath of the fall of Sevastopol, including this panoramic view of Fort Nicolas, made his reputation as a photographer. Fort Nicholas was one of several forts and bastions that protected the entrance to the port's harbour.
