As Paymaster General of British forces in Corfu from 1816 to 1820,Joseph Cartwright toured the Ionian Islands. His marine paintings included depictions of the naval engagement at Navarino in 1827, a crucial battle in the Greek War of Independence. Cartwright's works were exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Society of British Artists.
