'Hazardous work. A listening post in a shell crater in "No Man's Land" near Lagincourt, 1917 (c)

Photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1917 (c).

Listening posts were positioned in advance of the front line trenches. They were used to monitor enemy activity and gather intelligence. As they were situated close to the enemy lines, the occupants of listening posts were dangerously exposed and the enemy would regularly launch raids against them.

From a collection of 96 stereoscopic photographs entitled 'The Great War'.
