A group of 'natives' at the Ordnance Store, Suakin, 1884 (c)

Photograph, 1st Sudan War, 1884 (c).

Wherever in the world they were operating, British armies depended greatly on local people to carry supplies and ammunition when on the march. Major-General Gerald Graham's Suakin Field Force was no different and employed large numbers of Arab and African bearers during its operations in the Sudan.

From an album of 72 photograph taken by the Royal Engineers with the Suakin Field Force.
