3.5 oz ball from cannister shell or grape shot fired from a Russian cannon, Crimean War (1854-56)
This 3.5oz (99g.) ball is part of a discharge of grape shot, so called because the assemblage of similar-sized iron balls gathered together in a bag and fired from a cannon at short range (achieving an effect like a giant shot-gun) resembles a bunch of grapes. It is believed to have caused the hole that can be seen in the shako (NAM 1973-09-33-3) worn by Lieutenant-Colonel Edmund Jeffreys, 88th Regiment of Foot (Connaught Rangers), during the Crimean War.
