Mule transport moves along the Ngakyedauk Pass road with supplies for the 7th Indian Division, Burma, February 1944

Photograph, World War Two, Far East, 1944.

Mules were an excellent means of transport in the rough terrain of Burma. They could navigate areas inaccessible to motor transport. In February 1944 the 7th Indian Division was engaged in the Battle of the Admin Box, a Japanese attack aimed at drawing Allied reserves from the Central Front in Assam where they hoped to launch a major new offensive.

From a collection of official photographs collected by Major General (later Lieutenant General) Sir Frank Walter Messervy.
