Waterbottle, universal pattern, 1862
Wood, bound with metal hoops, cylindrical in shape, with stopper; marked on one side, 'R.A.' and the other 'W D 1862'.
This round wooden cask waterbottle is a modified version of the type carried in the Crimean War (1854-1856); the only difference is that with the earlier version the wooden panels on the curved edge protrude marginally over the front face. Although waterbottles carried in the Crimean War were usually painted blue, this example has been re-painted black and marked to the Royal Artillery, although in places some blue paint can still be seen.
