This photograph was taken in England prior to Operation OVERLORD, the invasion of mainland Europe in June 1944.
Lieutenant James C Sturrock was among a number of first line reinforcements to join 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) in January 1943 during the North African campaign. He was promoted to Captain in March 1943 and commanded 'D' Squadron.
According to the Sharpshooters' war diary, was later wounded near Eterville in Normandy, during an armoured engagement with German Mark IV and Panther tanks on 10 July 1944. He later replaced Major Oliver Woods as 'A' Squadron Leader in February 1945.
