Allan Grant (1911-1997) joined the 23rd London Armoured Car Company (The Sharpshooters) in 1929. He was commissioned from the ranks in 1938 and became a tank commander with the 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters). He served as an adjutant in North Africa, where he won his Military Cross. Allan saw further action in Sicily where he took command of the regiment during the battle around Primosole Bridge.
This photograph was taken in England prior to Operation OVERLORD, the invasion of mainland Europe in June 1944. After heavy losses in Normandy in 1944, the 3rd and 4th County of London Yeomanry were amalgamated. Grant was one of the surplus officers sent home to England.
