Floor 'bumper' or polisher, 1955

Rectangular iron weight mounted, with nuts and bolts, above a brush, fitted to a wooden pole. The brush has close set black bristles and a rope fixed round the edge to from wear when in use.

Bumping the floor was a ritual carried out in every barrack room. The wooden floor was bumped with the heavy brush to clean the surface thoroughly. Sometimes a man stood on the bumper and was pulled along by several others to increase the cleaning pressure.
