Paper cartridge with musket size ball, 1825-1850 (c)
This cartridge is of the type used with the Pattern 1842 Smoothbore Percussion Musket. The paper cartridge contains a spherical lead ball of .685 in (1.74 cm) and 125 grains (8.1 g) of powder. The cartridge was torn open and the powder, wadding and ball rammed down the gun barrel prior to firing.
