Socket Bayonet for Pattern 1842 Smoothbore Percussion Musket, post 1842, engraved to the 92nd (Highland) Regiment of Foot

Blade is stamped with the maker's name, S Hill, Birmingham.

The Pattern 1842 musket incorporated a new bayonet spring catch, invented by George Lovell, Inspector of Small Arms at the Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield. It was designed to hold the bayonet in place more securely.

The bayonet was based on the standard design at the time, with a different shaped collar so that it would fit the new spring catch. This type of bayonet was also initially issued for the Pattern 1851 Minié Rifle Musket, and was replaced in 1853 by the Enfield bayonet.
