Baker rifle socket bayonet, 1815

Most socket bayonets consisted of a short steel tube that fitted over the gun barrel on to which was welded a steel blade. The socket was designed to be locked on to the gun by means of a slot that attached to a stud or catch on the foresight. Unlike older 'plug' bayonets, this type of blade allowed soldiers to fire and reload their weapons without removing their bayonets.
