'1751 - King's Guidon', 1910 (c)
Pen and ink drawing attributed to Reginald Augustus Wymer (1849-1935), 1910 (c).
This unit was raised as a dragoon regiment in southern England in 1715, after which it was immediately sent to Preston to face the 1st Jacobite Rebellion. From 1717 to 1742, the regiment was in Ireland. It faced the Jacobites again in 1745, this time in Scotland. It fought at Prestonpans and Falkirk, before returning to Ireland in 1746 for nearly 50 more years of peacekeeping. During this period, it was ranked as the 14th Dragoons in 1751. Then, in 1776, it was designated a light dragoon regiment.
Wymer had retired from the British Army as a Major by 1905, but he had served with the 34th Foot, before transferring to the 91st Highlanders in 1870. He was later made Captain of the 2nd (Militia) Battalion of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.
