Lieutenant-Colonel (later Lieutenant General) William Anson McCleverty, 48th Regiment, 1852 (c)

The son of Major-General Robert McCleverty, William McCleverty (1806-1897) was commissioned into the 48th (Northamptonshire) Regiment of Foot in 1824. He took part in the campaign against the Maharajah of Coorg (1834) and served in Gibraltar (1838), Jamaica (1844) and New Zealand (1847) where he also presided over several land disputes. Promoted to major-general in 1860, he commanded the Madras district before serving as Commander-in-chief of the Madras Army from 1867 until 1871. He was promoted to general in 1876.
