'Corpl. C. E. Garforth. V.C.', 1915
Cigarette card published by Gallaher Limited, Belfast and Liverpool, Number 3 from the 1st series of the 'The Great War Victoria Cross Heroes' series; a set of 200 cigarette cards, 1915
Portrait of Corporal Charles Ernest Garforth VC, 15th (The King's) Hussars. Garforth was born in London on 23 October 1891. He transferred to the 15th (The King's) Hussars in May 1911.
The reverse of the card summarises the exploits of Garforth who volunteered 'to cut wire entanglements to let his squadron escape at Harmignies' on 23 August 1914 during the rearguard action at Mons. The card also mentions two further acts of gallantry which took place on the 6 and 7 September 1914 at Dammartin. Garforth 'carried a wounded comrade to safety, and later, while under fire, released a sergeant from his fallen horse'. The former beneficiary was Sergeant Scarterfield who was leading a patrol; the latter was Sergeant Lewis who was apparently rescued as Garforth drew German fire away from him.
Garforth's eventful autumn continued when he was captured on another patrol on 13 October 1914. Despite three escape attempts Garforth remained a prisoner of war until he was repatriated in November 1918. He died on 1 July 1973.
Cigarette cards were produced from the mid 1870s until the end of World War Two (1939-1945). Used to strengthen thin cigarette packs the cards were quickly developed into advertising devices. Series of cards covering every conceivable subject, from sportsmen to flora and fauna, were produced to encourage collectors and potential smokers alike.
One of a collection of 103 cigarette cards.
