'Lieut. Frederick H. Tubb, V.C.', cigarette card, 1915

Cigarette card, No 88 of the 4th series of 'The Great War Victoria Cross Heroes', a set of cigarette cards, published by Gallaher Limited, Belfast and London, 1915.

The reverse of the card includes a printed citation, relating how Tubb,'won this honour for conspicuous bravery at Lone Pine trenches, Gallipoli, Aug. 9th, 1915. The enemy attacked his trench and destroyed a sand-bag barricade, but he and his men drove the enemy back and rebuilt the barricade. This was repeated on two further occasions, but although wounded he finally held his position.'

Tubb survived the Gallipoli campaign but on 20 September 1917 he died of wounds received during the 3rd Battle of Ypres. He was shot by a German sniper and subsequently wounded by Allied artillery.

Cigarette cards were produced from the mid 1870s until the end of World War Two (1939-1945). Used to strengthen thin cigarette packs the cards were quickly developed into advertising devices. Series of cards covering every conceivable subject, from sportsmen to flora and fauna, were produced to encourage collectors and potential smokers alike.
