'Colonel O Cavenagh B.N.I.', 1858

Colonel Orfeur Cavenagh, seated in uniform holding riding crop, 1858.

Orfeur Cavenagh (1820-1891) served with the 32nd Bengal Native Infantry, 2nd Bengal Irregular Cavalry and the 4th Bengal Irregular Cavalry. He lost a foot when hit by a round shot at the Battle of Maharajpore during the Gwalior campaign in 1843 and was wounded in the arm at Badhowal during the 1st Sikh War. Cavenagh served as Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1859 to 1867 and wrote a memoir, 'Reminiscences of an Indian Official'. He was promoted to the rank of general in 1877.
