Haile Selassie had fled to Djibouti after the Italian invasion of Abyssinia in 1936. The Royal Navy transported the Emperor to Palestine where he visited Jerusalem. After two weeks he continued on to exile in England, returning to his home in 1941 when Italian forces were defeated.
