'How Sergeant Richardson (Lord Strathcona's Corps) won his Victoria Cross', 1900 (c)

Cigarette card published by Morris and Sons Limited, one of a set of twenty cigarette cards commemorating winners of the Victoria Cross during the Boer War (1899-1902), 1900 (c).

Sergeant Arthur Herbert Lindsay Richardson formerly of the Canadian North-West Mounted Police, served with Lord Strathcona's Horse during the Boer War (1899-1902). He was born in Southport, Lancashire in 1874. Richardson was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on 5 July 1900 at Wolvespruit, near Standerton in the Transvaal. During a skirmish with Boer forces his company was forced to retire under heavy fire. Richardson rode back to save a dismounted comrade who had been wounded. Richardson died, aged 58, in Liverpool on 16 December 1932.

Cigarette cards were produced from the mid 1870s until the end of World War Two (1939-1945). Used to strengthen thin cigarette packs the cards were quickly developed into advertising devices. Series of cards covering every conceivable subject, from sportsmen to flora and fauna, were produced to encourage collectors and potential smokers alike.
