Bronze 41.5 inch mortar, 1816

Bronze mortars were much used during Indian campaigns. With a maximum range of up to 900 metres, these easily portable guns were often employed in sieges to fire shells over walls using extreme elevation. This particular mortar was produced at the Fort William foundry while Major (later Major-General) James Doddington Sherwood was Commissary of Stores.
