Regimental pattern flintlock pistol used by Lieutenant-General Richard St George, 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars, Dublin, 1740 (c)

The effective range of a flintlock pistol was very short, and they were frequently used alongside the sword or cutlass. Pistols were usually smoothbore although rifled pistols were also produced.
