Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), Rouen, France, 1917

Photograph taken by Lieutenant John Warwick Brooke, World War One (1914-1918), 1917.

WAAC clerks consulting a card index in the Central Registry Office in Rouen, 24 July 1917. The WAAC was created in 1917 to enable women to take on behind the scenes roles such as administration, store work and catering. This meant more men would be freed up to move forward to front line service.

From an album of 55 photographs relating to the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC).
