Pattern 1821 Heavy Cavalry Trooper's Sword, 1835 (c)

Although officially accepted in 1821, production of the sword only began in 1827. Both this type and the light cavalry sword had the new 'cut and thrust' blade which was heavily criticised by the cavalry. Modifications were suggested and the heavy cavalry sword and scabbard were improved in the mid-1830s, including a new thicker blade. The sword itself was an improvement on the old 1796 Pattern. The bowl guard gave good protection to the hand and such guards became standard later in the century.
